‘The Walking Dead’ creator Robert Kirkman tells a multi-layered, fascinating story about how he came up with the name Negan…
It’s hard to imagine Negan from ‘The Walking Dead’ having origins related to ‘Star Trek’ but it’s actually true.
Well sort of.
‘The Walking Dead’ creator Robert Kirkman revealed how he came up with the name Negan during Sunday night’s episode of ‘Talking Dead’.
It turns out, Kirkman wanted to name the character with something no one had ever heard before but one quick search on the internet told him that he wasn’t as creative as much as perhaps his brain locked away a memory about a random alien from ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’.
“I like to make up names that aren’t really names and then I Google then and I’m like ‘oh yeah someone does have that name’, which happens from time to time,” Kirkman explained.
“I just wanted the name to sound negative in some way so I was calling him ‘Nagus’ for a long time, which I thought was just a word I pulled from thin air but it turns out that’s the leader in the Ferengi in ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’ so I was like ‘can’t all him Nagus. So then I was just like ‘Negan’ that sounds fine.”
While Negan may have started out as an imaginary word created by Robert Kirkman, thanks to ‘The Walking Dead’, it’s a vile name that will be forever associated with villainy from here on out.
