Tom Holland says he considers “Spider-Man: No Way Home” as the end of the franchise after making three solo films as everybody’s favorite webslinger…
Tom Holland was in tears during one of the final days of shooting “Spider-Man: No Way Home” because he felt like he was reaching the end of the road after a five-year long journey.
Now that might sound somewhat surprising considering no one has said that the third solo film in the current “Spider-Man” series would be the last but that’s exactly what Holland hinted at when previewing the movie that’s set for release on December 17.
According to Holland, he got emotional while filming alongside Zendaya, who plays his on-screen girlfriend M.J., as well as Jacob Batalon, who portrays Peter Parker’s best friend Ned.
“We’ve been making these films for five years now,” Holland explained when speaking to EW. “We’ve had such an amazing relationship, the three of us. We’ve been with each other every step of the way. We’ve done every single film, every single press tour.
“So this one scene, [we didn’t know] if this would be the last time [we were all working together.] [It] was heartbreaking but also really exciting because we’re all moving into the next chapter of our careers. So sharing that moment with them was maybe the best day I’ve ever had on set. I don’t think I’ve cried like that ever.”
There’s no word yet if “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will mark the end of the series that’s seen Holland take over the role as the famed webslinger while making all three films alongside director Jon Watts.
Watts has already signed on to direct the upcoming “Fantastic Four” movie, which will take place under the Marvel Studios banner for the first time ever after Disney acquired those characters as part of the deal to purchase FOX in 2019.
Of course, Holland reaching the conclusion of his own series of films doesn’t mean he’s done playing Spider-Man because it’s entirely possible that he would carry on with that character while appearing in other films just like Robert Downey Jr. after he completed three “Iron Man” movies yet still popped up in numerous other Marvel projects.
Still, Holland was prepared to at least say goodbye to this particular version of the character in solo films after he wrapped up production on “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
“We were all treating [No Way Home] as the end of a franchise, let’s say,” Holland said.. “I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy. We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films.
“Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” will deal with the fallout from Peter Parker being exposed as Spider-Man in the previous film — “Spider-Man: Far From Home” — as his entire life gets turned upside down now that his secret identity isn’t so secret anymore. In an attempt to return things to normal, Peter reaches out to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to see if it’s possible that he could cast a spell and erase the revelation that he is Spider-Man.
What results is a catastrophic event that brings Peter face-to-face with villains from across the multiverse including Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), who previously appeared in “Spider-Man 2” with Tobey Maguire in the lead role as well as Jamie Foxx as Electro as he returns following a role in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” opposite Andrew Garfield.
“Spider-Man: Far From Home” will land in theaters on Dec. 17 and you can take a look at the trailer below:
