Tom Welling will suit up as Superman for the first time since ‘Smallville’ ended when he joins the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ crossover…
Look up in the sky. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s Tom Welling!
The actor who portrayed Clark Kent/Superman on ‘Smallville’ is returning to the iconic character he played for 10 seasons to take part in the highly anticipated Arrow-verse ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ crossover kicking off later this year.
The massive event series that will start in December and then wrap up in January features the most impressive list of guest stars to ever star on the CW series with Welling as the latest actor confirmed to return for the crossover.
“For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville,” EP Marc Guggenheim said in a statement. “Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrow-verse, without it. So when we first started talking about ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths,’ our first, second and third priorities were getting Tom to reprise his iconic role as Clark Kent. To say that we’re thrilled would be a Superman-sized understatement.”
Welling has been hailed for his portrayal as Clark Kent in the slow burn throughout ‘Smallville’ that eventually saw him take up the mantle as Superman in the series finale back in 2011. Since that time, Welling has mostly focused on independent features but he did recently return to the small screen for an arc on the Netflix series ‘Lucifer’.
Now he will be suiting up again as Superman as he joins a very long list of guest stars including two more actors — Tyler Hoechlin and Brandon Routh — who will also be portraying the Man of Steel for various alternate universes during the crossover event series. Jon Cryer will be returning as Lex Luthor after getting rave reviews for that part during ‘Supergirl’ last season. Burt Ward — best known as Robin from the classic ‘Batman’ television series — will also be playing an undisclosed role in the upcoming crossover series.

‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ will take place over five episodes starting with ‘Supergirl’ on Sunday night, December 8 followed by ‘Batwoman’ on Monday night, December 9 and then ‘The Flash’ on Tuesday night, December 10. The shows will then take a hiatus with the final two episodes in the crossover picking up on January 14 with back-to-back episodes of ‘Arrow’ and ‘Legends of Tomorrow’.
Unlike past crossover events that have happened on the CW series, this year’s massive undertaking is essentially being treated as a five hour long movie so none of the episodes are expected to be themed towards any one character or group of characters over another. In other words, every episode of the crossover will involve all of the major characters taking part in this huge event.
‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ kicks off this December on the CW.
