True Detective has become the must watch show of 2014 but despite great ratings and being a critical darling, the series hasn’t been locked up for a season 2 as of yet…
There are only two weeks to go until the first season of True Detective comes to an end, and the tension in the air is palpable as just about everyone waits with bated breath to see how this case that started in 1995 with the murder of Dora Lange will end.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have been nothing short of brilliant all season long, and considering the entire show has been written by one man (Nic Pizzolatto) and directed by one person (Cary Jo Fukunaga) it’s really an achievement never before seen on television.
So with the series gaining huge ratings and critical adoration, it seems strange that a season 2 commitment hasn’t been given by HBO as of yet.
According to Pizzolatto, HBO is very interested in bringing back the anthology series for another year, but they haven’t made a commitment yet without knowing where the story goes from here.
“They want to do season 2,” Pizzolatto told EW.com. “I just have to give them scripts and see if they like them! It would be great if we could use some of the same actors, like a reparatory company. It would be different characters, different setting. That’s part of the fun of the anthology.”
The concept behind True Detective from the start has been each season would stand alone separate from the others with new characters very much like Ryan Murphy’s series American Horror Story on FX. In other words, Marty Hart and Rust Cohle won’t be back for season 2, but that doesn’t mean other peripheral characters couldn’t pop up or some of the same actors returning although don’t count on either McConaughey or Harrelson coming back for a second turn.
The show’s reception has led to fantasy pairings of A-list celebrities from all over the world for a season 2 and sources have indicated that numerous actors and actresses have expressed interest in appearing in a new year of True Detective.
So all signs are pointing towards a renewal for a second season of True Detective — it’s just a waiting game for HBO to finally confirm it.
