The new “Morbius” trailer has arrived with more than a few connections tying the film to both Spider-Man and Venom…
It looks like Sony is really trying to create a shared Spider-verse — at least based upon the new “Morbius” trailer that dropped on Tuesday.
The long delayed film starring Jared Leto is finally due out on January 28, 2022 and now a much deeper look at the upcoming movie has been released.
Leto stars as Dr. Michael Morbius — a man who has been infected with a rare blood disease and he’s spent much of his life trying to find a cure. When Morbius finally has a breakthrough, he begins to realize that the cure might be worse than the disease, especially after his bloodlust becomes just like a vampire.
Here’s the official synopsis from Sony:
“Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. While at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?”
Now the interesting thing about the trailer are all the ties this film seems to share with the larger universe where both Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) and Venom (played by Tom Hardy) exist.
Michael Keaton pops up in the trailer as he reprises his role as Adrian Toomes aka The Vulture after he previously appeared in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and if that wasn’t enough, Morbius jokes with somebody that he’s actually Venom after his transformation from man to beast.
It seems clear that Sony is really leaning into the larger Spider-Man universe considering the studio owns the rights to all those characters, while also sharing Spidey himself with Marvel Studios. It remains to be seen how much more “Morbius” will tie back to Spider-Man, especially with the next film in that series “Spider-Man: No Way Home” due out in December.
For now, take a look at the new “Morbius” trailer and get ready for the film to come out on Jan. 28, 2022.
