Following an Oscar win for “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” the first look at the highly anticipated sequel has finally arrived along with a title for what is now expected to become at least a trilogy of films.
The new movie will be called “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part One” with the movie set for release on October 7, 2022.
Writer-producer combo Phil Lord and Chris Miller explained how plans for just a follow up to “Into the Spider-Verse” eventually led them to splitting the idea into two separate films in order to tell the best possible story involving Miles Morales.
“Miles’ story is an epic,” Lord and Miller said. “We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise we realized it was two movies instead of one. We’re working on them both as we speak. Part Two will be out sometime in 2023. We will sleep again in 2024.”
Here’s the official synopsis for the film:
“Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.”
While the original film saw characters from across the multi-verse come crashing into Miles’ world, this time he’ll be the one traveling and that will come along with a whole new set of characters as well as some familiar faces returning to the sequel.
In the new teaser just released, Miles is visited by his old pal Spider-Gwen aka Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) but the upcoming sequel promises a whole lot more.
“Miles will reunite with some old friends and meet… a lot of new ones,” Lord and Miller said.
One person who will definitely play a larger part in the upcoming film is Spider-Man 2099, who appeared in a credit sequence in the original film with Oscar Isaac voicing that character. There will be plenty more revealed in the coming months including hints about other past characters who might be returning for the sequel.
For now, take a look at the first teaser for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part One” and get ready for the film’s release in October 2022.
