Vince Vaughn comments on ‘True Detective’ season 2 and how the show is so different from the first year that comparisons aren’t needed…

The anticipation and curiosity surrounding ‘True Detective’ season 2 continues to grow as fans grow anxious for any tidbit of news be released ahead of the show’s debut in the summer of 2015.
The casting process alone ran for several months with speculation all over the place about potential actors and actresses to step into the shoes Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson filled so perfectly in the first season.
If there is any peril about the second season of a show like ‘True Detective’, it’s the nervousness that the series just can’t duplicate another year as good as the first where everything hit on all cylinders from the casting to the script to the on screen execution.
While filming is still going on currently, Vince Vaughn has leaked out a little bit of information about ‘True Detective’ season 2 while speaking to Playboy recently about the expectations fans have for the series to return with the same kind of fire possessed during the first year in 2014.
“Nic Pizzolatto is such a great writer, and so much of this is driven by his stories. I thought Woody and Matthew did an exceptional job with the first season,” Vaughn said. “This one’s very different, though. It’s a totally different story, with its own characters.”
It turns out Vaughn actually approached Pizzolatto about working together several years ago on another project the actor was working on and he sought out the ‘True Detective’ creator as a potential writer for the script. While things didn’t pan out at the time, Vaughn always kept it in the back of his mind that he wanted to work with Pizzolatto in the future.
When casting for ‘True Detective’ season 2 started, Vaughn finally got his chance to work with the now famous show creator and it seems the chemistry has been working out perfectly on set thus far.
“I was developing a movie version of The Rockford Files and met with Nic about writing it,” Vaughn revealed. “He was really enthusiastic but was already working on a crime drama set in Los Angeles, and he gracefully said it was best for him to focus on True Detective.
“Then he reached out to me about doing that series, and I was beyond flattered and thrilled to collaborate with him. I was happy to work with Colin Farrell too, whom I’d never worked with before.”
The plot for season 2 does involve a pair of detectives like the first season — played by Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch — as they investigate the death of a prominent but corrupt city manager who was planning an expansive and revolutionary transit system in California. Vaughn plays Frank Seymon, a corrupt local businessman with plans of his own as he gets tied up in the murder investigation.
Vaughn says the writing is just as crisp and on point as the first season, but the story and characters are so different that the new ‘True Detective’ will definitely stand on its own two feet and not live in the shadow of the original.
“The thing that’s consistent is the richness of the characters and the quality of the material. That was Louisiana. This is a California-based story, and it was kind of birthed from here. A lot of it is set in Los Angeles,” Vaughn said. “I really like my character. Nic is so great about investigating characters and their complexities in an authentic and engaging way.
“I want to watch this show not because I’m in it but as a fan of the material.”
No debut date has been announced as of yet, but ‘True Detective’ season 2 is expected to premiere sometime in the summer of 2015 on HBO.
