The critically acclaimed series Watchmen might come alive as a TV series on HBO….
HBO has started preliminary talks with writer/director Zack Snyder about adapting the popular and seminal comic book series Watchmen into a TV series on the premium cable network.
Discussions are very early at this point, but HBO has confirmed that they are discussing the possibility with Snyder, who directed the 2009 film of the same name based on the comic book originally written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons.
“Preliminary discussions regarding Watchmen have occurred but we have no additional information and no deals are in place,” HBO said in a statement.
Watchmen is considered one of the greatest comic book series of all time but adapting the material into a film took many years as the project bounced around from several different studios, writers and directors.
Eventually, Snyder brought the film to life in 2009 in a well received adaptation of the original material although the movie had mediocre results at the box office.
The new series being proposed at HBO could be a reimagining of the movie with a longer form made for television or possibly a prequel, which DC Comics released in a series just recently called Before Watchmen with a slew of well known writers working on the project after Moore washed his hands of Watchmen many years ago.
There’s no telling if this series will come alive or not, but the prospect of a Watchmen TV event on HBO sounds like the perfect format to make it happen.
