Legendary horror filmmaker Wes Craven has died at the age of 76 after battling brain cancer.
Craven is best known as the writer and creator behind the Nightmare on Elm Street film series, which he launched in 1984 with sequels and remakes appearing in theaters as recently as 2010 with another reboot reportedly in the works.
Prior to the Elm Street franchise and his iconic character Freddy Krueger becoming part of pop culture history, Craven was already producing some of the scariest films in Hollywood. He started his career with two cult classics, The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes, both of which maintain a rabid fan base to this day.
Craven stayed busy with several other films during the 1980’s and 1990’s including The People Under the Stairs, The Serpent and the Rainbow and Shocker.
Craven took a step back into the spotlight in 1996 when he directed the film Scream from a screenplay developed by Kevin Williamson.
Craven stuck around with that franchise for three more movies and the Scream series ultimately became the biggest hit of his entire career with the first film in the franchise making over $173 million at the box office.
Craven’s family posted a tribute to the legendary writer/director on his official Twitter account on Sunday night.
