The Russo brothers directed some of the most iconic films in Marvel Studios history but will the brother duo ever return to do another movie after “Avengers: Endgame”?
The Russo brothers — Joe and Anthony — are responsible for some of the most iconic films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After directing “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War,” the siblings were then put in charge of arguably the two most important films in Marvel history with “Avengers: Infinity War” and the sequel “Avengers: Endgame.”
“Avengers: Endgame” is now the highest grossing film of all time but the Russo brothers have now gone onto work on different projects including the upcoming movie “Cherry,” which will reunite them with “Spider-Man” actor Tom Holland in the lead role. In addition to that movie, the Russo’s are also producing films while developing new projects under their own banner called AGBO Films but that doesn’t mean they’ve shunned superhero projects in the future.
On Monday to help celebrate the one year anniversary of the release of “Avengers: Endgame,” Anthony and Joe Russo did a live commentary track for the first hour of the film while answering some fan questions along the way. One of the biggest questions was whether or not Joe and Anthony would return to direct another Marvel movie in the wake of the success of their past two films that helped close out the latest phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. We adore Kevin [Feige], Lou [D’Esposito] and Victoria [Alonso], Marvel, an amazing experience,” Joe Russo responded when asked about returning to Marvel Studios. “Both creatively, emotionally and would count everyone there as dear friends.
“We’re always looking for something to do together. It’s just the question of timing and when you find the right material.”
Marvel is currently in a bit of a holding pattern due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has shut down productions not to mention push back release dates for almost every film on their roster. The MCU is currently gearing up for the next phase of projects that will now include the entire Marvel roster following the sale of the majority of FOX’s assets to Disney last year. That means Marvel Studios now own the rights to characters like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.
Given enough time and the right project, it’s hard to imagine that Marvel won’t come calling on the Russo brothers to once again step into save the day with another film. There’s no telling where the MCU will be headed but the Russo brothers are certainly in the best position to direct it.
Based on their answer, expect Marvel Studios and the Russo’s to team up again before it’s all said and done.
