Oscar winner William Hurt has passed away at the age of 71 after a long career spanning several decades with numerous acclaimed roles to his credit…
William Hurt — a veteran actor who won an Academy Award in 1985 — has died at the age of 71.
Hurt’s son posted the news about his father on Sunday.
“It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes.”
Hurt was a mainstay in films and television since 1977 when he landed his first role on the series “Kojak” and he remained as busy as ever for more than 40 years, which included nominations for Oscars on four different occasions. He starred in films such as “Broadcast News” and “Children of a Lesser God” and also scored a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his ominous role in the 2005 comic book adaptation “A History of Violence” where he starred opposite Viggo Mortensen.
In 1980, Hurt had his first major breakout role in the horror film “Altered States,” which became a cult classic in the body-horror genre.
On television, Hurt earned an Emmy nomination for his work on the TV series “Damages” and he also appeared in the “Dune” miniseries where he starred as Duke Leto Atreides.
More recently, Hurt became well known to a whole new audience after he starred in “The Incredible Hulk” as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Hurt would reprise that role several more times while starring in Marvel films such as “Captain America: Civil War” as well as “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
Most recently, Hurt made an appearance in the “Black Widow” film opposite Scarlett Johansson. Marvel Studios paid tribute to Hurt on Sunday.
