Writer and director Kevin Smith is resting in a California hospital after revealing that he suffered a ‘massive’ heart attack ahead of a comedy show he was performing on Sunday night.
Smith was shooting a pair of stand up specials in Glendale, California when he began experiencing nausea as well as a heavy feeling in his chest and he was immediately rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
According to Smith, he had complete blockage of one of his arteries and if not for the quick action of his doctors, he may have died from the heart attack.
“I was trying to do a killer standup special this evening but I might’ve gone too far,” Smith wrote on Instagram. “After the first show, I felt kinda nauseous. I threw up a little but it didn’t seem to help. Then I started sweating buckets and my chest felt heavy. Turns out I had a massive heart attack. The Doctor who saved my life at the Glendale hospital told me I had 100% blockage of my LAD artery (also known as “the Widow-Maker” because when it goes, you’re a goner).
“If I hadn’t canceled the second show to go to the hospital, the doc said I would’ve died tonight. For now, I’m still above ground!”
It hit close to home for Smith, who lost his father to a heart attack as well several years ago.
The good news is Smith is now resting and in recovery following the scary incident and he’s received an out pouring of support from friends, family and colleagues sending him best wishes.
Praying for you. I will continue to. You inspired me with Clerks when I was a senior HS. I’m tagging my Lb/rb football coach who showed me the movie cause he believed in me and knew I’d be inspired. @hodge1916 ????♥️???? https://t.co/syB7BiQaoY
