Avengers 2: Age of Ultron News – Joss Whedon: “I Love Ultron Because He’s So Pissed Off”

Avengers 2 director and writer Joss Whedon explains what will drive Ultron in the upcoming sequel to his blockbuster hit…

There are still literally dozens of theories about how Avengers 2: Age of Ultron will unfold, but no question looms larger than how the killer robot originally built by Dr. Hank Pym will be similar or different than the character from the comics.

Every interpretation of a comic book character brought to life on film inevitably has some differences, and Ultron will be no different.

The comic book version was a creation of Pym who eventually became self-aware, and is in a constant battle to destroy humanity and especially The Avengers, who stop him at every turn.

Ultron has gone through any number of incarnations over the years (the character first appeared Avengers No. 54 in 1968), and director/writer Joss Whedon will have yet another crack at recreating the killer robot with a third for blood.

Whedon spoke to EW.com this week while promoting the launch of his new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series that debuts on ABC on Tuesday, Sept 24 at 8pm ET/PT.

Whedon is currently readying the script for The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, which will begin shooting during the first quarter of 2014.

“I knew right away what I wanted to do with him,” Whedon says. “He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [a new character, Scarlet Witch] who’s a witch.”

In the comics Ultron has super strength, super speed, he’s able to fly at super sonic speeds, flash blasts of laser energy from his hands and eyes, and an “encephalo ray” which can put a victim into a coma where he’s also able to exert mind control abilities.

Whedon doesn’t plan on making Ultron quite so omnipotent in the movie, but he will still be a formidable foe for the superhero team led by Tony Stark and Captain America.

One part of Ultron that won’t change is the internal anger that drives him to want to eviscerate humanity one soul at a time. The rage deep down in Ultron is going to burn a fire right through The Avengers—or at least he’ll certainly try.

“As a character I love [Ultron],” Whedon says, “because he’s so pissed off.”

More casting news about Avengers 2: Age of Ultron should also be released in the coming days as Whedon and crew look to find the actress who will play Wanda Maximoff aka The Scarlet Witch.

Avengers 2: Age of Ultron is scheduled for a May, 2015 release date in theaters.
