In a huge piece of news, Marvel and Sony have come to an agreement to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel cinematic universe…
If there’s been one great hope of comic book and superhero film fans in general it’s that one day Spider-Man — one of the most iconic and famed characters in the history of the genre — would be included in the new Marvel family of films.
Now that dream is reality.
Late Monday night, executives from Marvel and Sony announced a new partnership that will see the web-slinger appear in the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) going forward with potential appearances in Captain America 3 or the upcoming Avengers sequels all as possible landing spots for his first film role under the new deal.
Marvel will then work hand in hand with Sony to produce a stand-alone Spider-Man feature film that will be released on July 28, 2017.
The new partnership means a brand new age Spider-Man with an entire different direction than the recent ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ films that had been released by Sony. Marvel will produce the new movies with Sony while inviting Spider-Man into their world of films and possibly crossing over more Marvel characters into the Spider-Man films as well.
“I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. “Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”
The appearance of Spider-Man in the MCU has been one of the only missing pieces of the puzzle in an otherwise stellar run for the company producing films since joining the Disney family several years ago. The plans for the Marvel films won’t slow down either with a huge slate of movies already scheduled for the next five years and now Spider-Man can be included in those features as well.
Many comic book fans will salivate at the idea that Spider-Man could now appear in ‘Captain America 3: Civil War’ becuase the original storyline that the film is based on required a heavy part from the webslinger. Speculation was running wild that if the story in the film was similar at all to the comic books, Spider-Man would either have to be replaced or the continuity would change dramatically.
With this new announcement, anything is possible.
Now the next stage of the process is finding out who is going to play the new Spider-Man in the Marvel movie family and which film will ultimately be his first? Considering the new Spider-Man film is now slated for a July 28, 2017 release — which will also push back the third Thor movie — then the options are limited for which movie he can make his first appearance. The movies that are slated for release between now and July 28, 2017 include — Captain America 3: Civil War (May 6, 2016), Doctor Strange (November 4, 2016) and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (May 5, 2017). In other words all signs are pointint towards Spider-Man appearing in Captain America 3, but until it’s announced, nothing is official.
So let the speculation begin — who will play Spider-Man and what will his role be in this new Marvel universe???
