Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has long teased the possibility of joining the DC movie universe but now it appears to be a reality…
While doing press for his latest film ‘Hercules’, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson let loose that DC will be making an announcement very soon about a character he will be playing in an upcoming movie. Johnson has long teased the possibility of joining the DC Universe as one of their most iconic characters, but until now there’s been no word on who that might be.
Speculation ran wild that Johnson might play Green Lantern John Stewart in the upcoming Justice League movie because he not only fits the mold for that character, but following the colossal flop of the Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds, it was hard to imagine DC using Hal Jordan in the upcoming Justice League feature.
Johnson shoots down that idea, but then lets loose with the closest thing to an official confirmation as you can get for the character he will be playing in an upcoming movie.
“There’s a character out there that we’re going to announce very soon that I’m going to play,” Johnson revealed in the interview. “Just say this — the power of Superman and it’s not Green Lantern by the way.
“This character has the power of Superman, he can throw down — just say the word that’s all I’m going to say.”
‘Say the word’ seems to reference the mystical character known as Shazam (previously Captain Marvel), who comes to life when his alter ego Billy Batson shouts the word ‘Shazam’ and he’s transformed into a Greek god, statuesque powerhouse with many of the same abilities and strengths as Superman.
A description of Shazam from DC Comics:
Just by saying SHAZAM!, Billy is transformed into a magical flying adult superhero, one with the genius of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the unbreakable will of Atlas, the lightning blasts of Zeus, the power of Achilles and the speed of Mercury. But gaining the power of the gods means inheriting their enemies too. With the abilities of the world’s mightiest mortal, Billy will have to struggle with magical threats as well as his own youthful naïveté. To truly tap into his power, this orphan who’s always kept people at arm’s length will have to learn what family really is.
If Johnson’s tease is true, then an announcement could be coming as early as this weekend when San Diego Comic Con takes place. Warner Bros. has a huge block of time secured for Saturday night in Hall H and his appearance could prompt quite a reaction from the 6000 plus packed into the room.
The only way to know for sure is to keep an eye on our exclusive San Diego Comic Con coverage starting on Wednesday and going until the end of the convention on Sunday.
