A new “Fantastic Four” film is finally on the way.
On Thursday, Disney announced that Jon Watts — best known as the director for “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and the upcoming third “Spider-Man” film starring Tom Holland — will direct the new movie from Marvel Studios.

This will be the first “Fantastic Four” movie with Marvel Studios after FOX previously owned the rights to those characters. The “Fantastic Four” was returned to Marvel as part of the massive FOX sale that concluded in 2019.
Of course numerous “Fantastic Four” films already exist but none of those movies have ever become critical or commercial successes despite heavy pushes from FOX in the past. The most well known version of the “Fantastic Four” starred Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis.
Two films in that series were made but the FOX decided to reboot “Fantastic Four” with a new movie in 2015 from director Josh Trank that starred Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell. That film was ultimately deemed a disaster after making just over $167 million at the box office on a budget that reportedly ballooned to over $150 million.
Since that time “Fantastic Four” hasn’t appeared in any films or TV shows for that matter but the FOX sale to Disney once again put those character at the forefront for the future of Marvel Studios. In comic books, the Fantastic Four have played an integral part in numerous crossover storylines throughout the Marvel Universe.
Now the first family of Marvel is coming home with Reed Richards, Sue Richards, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm set to appear as part of the new “Fantastic Four” movie with Watt directing.
