Get ready for a brand new ‘Star Wars’ trilogy from writer and director Rian Johnson…
Rian Johnson is far from finished with the ‘Star Wars’ universe after directing ‘The Last Jedi’ due out later this year.
On Thursday, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Johnson along with writing partner Ron Bergman will craft an entirely new ‘Star Wars’ trilogy that will be set in a different part of the universe away from the Skywalker saga that is the focus on the main films.
Johnson’s ‘Star Wars’ films will introduce a whole new slate of characters and storylines taking place in a different corner of the universe.
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
Johnson and Bergman were equally excited for the opportunity to continue to work on a completely original ‘Star Wars’ idea with a trilogy of films already planned.
The timing makes sense for this announcement considering Johnson quickly pulled his name from consideration to direct the next ‘Star Wars’ movie following ‘The Last Jedi’ after Lucasfilm split with director Colin Trevorrow. The job ended up in the hands of J.J. Abrams, who directed ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and it seems clear now that Johnson had his own plans for the ‘Star Wars’ universe already in mind.
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
There’s no timeline on when the new ‘Star Wars’ trilogy will arrive but clearly Lucasfilm is invested in putting Johnson at the forefront of the movies after working together on ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’.
That film will hit theaters on December 15 as Johnson begins work on a whole new ‘Star Wars’ saga for the future.
