Batman’s prodigy Nightwing will get his own movie in a new project from Warner Bros and DC…
Nightwing is preparing to fly solo.
Warner Bros. and DC are plotting a new film focused on Batman’s original Robin — Dick Grayson — who eventually broke out on his own as Nightwing with ‘Lego Batman’ director Chris McKay already attached to the project.
Bill Dubuque, who recently penned ‘The Accountant’ starring Ben Affleck, is writing the script.
Before becoming Nightwing, Dick Grayson was the first Robin to team up with Batman after his acrobatic family, ‘The Flying Graysons’, were killed and he became a ward to Bruce Wayne. Years later, Grayson became Robin and he served as Batman’s sidekick until he broke away from his mentor and became his own hero — Nightwing.
The character first appeared in the 1980’s with Nightwing leading the Teen Titans while also handling his own crime fighting adventures. Nightwing has been a constant in the Batman universe in the comics but he’s never appeared in any of the prior DC films until now.
In the current DC extended universe, Robin was never mentioned but only referenced by a costume that hung inside the batcave in ‘Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ that appeared to show he was murdered by the Joker. In the comics, Jason Todd, the successor to Dick Grayson after he became Nightwing, was murdered by the Joker although there’s no telling if that’s the version of the story to be told in the DC film universe.
This is the latest offshoot for the growing Warner Bros/DC film empire as the studios continue to push out new material over the next few years. Next up for DC will be ‘Wonder Woman’ due out on June 2 followed by the star studded ‘Justice League’ film coming out on November 17.
