With Sony and Marvel teaming up for the next film in the Spider-Man franchise, it appears a writer and director have been found…
When the news broke a few weeks ago that Sony and Marvel had finally come to an agreement to share Spider-Man as a character with everybody’s favorite web-slinger now free to appear in upcoming films such as ‘Captain America 3: Civil War’ not to mention future Avengers movies, it was a massive shake up to the status quo of the Marvel film Universe.
As excited as it was to find out Spidey would be appearing in those upcoming Marvel films, the questions still remained about his future at Sony as a stand alone franchise, especially after a tepid reaction to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’, which failed to live up to everybody’s expectations.
It appears Sony is ready to move forward with a new Spider-Man film and the first details are now available.
According to Latino-Review (and they always get these scoops on the money), the new film franchise is expected to go under the title “The Spectacular Spider-Man” with Drew Goddard now signed on write and direct the movie.
Goddard was originally on board to head up “The Sinister Six” offshoot, which would focus on some of Spider-Man’s most notorious villains, but now it seems with the direction change at Sony and Marvel, he will take over the rebooted movie universe instead.
Goddard is best known for his work on films such as “Cabin in the Woods” and “World War Z” as well as television with “Lost” and serving as a producer on the upcoming “Daredevil” series on Netflix.
The story also reveals that the new movie will not have another origin story for Spider-Man and will instead jump right into the action with a high-school age Peter Parker being cast for the role. The plan will involve at least one member of The Avengers appearing in the upcoming Spider-Man film, most likely Iron Man with Robert Downey Jr. playing a small part in the movie.
This film will happen after the upcoming movie “Captain America 3: Civil War”, which is expected to be the first place Spider-Man will appear before swinging off to do his own solo film in 2017.
