Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter has teased for weeks that the bloodshed and violence in season 6 of the show would topple any previous effort from the popular outlaw biker drama.
While it may seem hard to believe given the litany of murders that’s taken place on Sons of Anarchy over the last five seasons, Sutter is upping the ante once again this year.
The club is in turmoil when the season begins despite settling some old beefs when last we saw the group known as SAMCRO. President Jax Teller has a new vice president in Chibs Telford, but his wife Tara is in jail currently brought up on charges of conspiracy to commit murder.
There’s still a delicate balance between the Sons and the group formerly led by Oakland gangster Damon Pope, who was killed at the end of last season. The man framed for his murder, Clay Morrow, currently sits in jail with a $5 million bounty on his head and an ex-U.S. Marshall named Lee Toric trying to turn his need for revenge against the club he once founded.
The stage is set for things to get awfully bloody, and Executive Producer Paris Barclay says that there is an end game in sight that starts with this season. Sutter has long stated that Sons of Anarchy would end in seven seasons, and with season six about to debut the pieces are starting to fall into place for the grand finale.
It starts off with a very turbulent and messy opening to the season—as Barclay tells it expect a lot of cast members to say goodbye early in the first few episodes.
“I think I can get away with this one—the people who start in the first episode of season six don’t even make it to episode seven,” Barclay told NerdcoreMovement.com recently. “It just doesn’t always work that way and this season is going to be even more brutal.”
The brutality is always part of a bigger picture when it comes to Sutter and the story arcs he sets up for his characters. Whether it’s Jax being torn between two worlds where he wants his club to live and thrive while watching his home life fall apart, or Gemma’s constant need for love and attention that costs those around her the most.
Since the day Sons of Anarchy started, Sutter has never backed down from the idea that his story follows the path of William Shakespeare’s epic drama “Hamlet”, and Barclay backs him up on that idea—especially when looking towards season seven.
“What I tell people is it’s a good time to read your Shakespeare,” Barclay teased about the final season of Sons of Anarchy. “Hamlet in particular.”
Sons of Anarchy season 6 returns on Tuesday night, September 10 at 10pm ET/PT.
