From killing a member to hide his own betrayal to a suicide attempt to being turned inside out as a pawn in a power play between two presidents, Theo Rossi has watched his character of Juice Ortiz go through the ringer in the last two years of Sons of Anarchy.
What started out as a comical character wearing diapers in season one has become one of the most fascinating players on the outlaw biker drama, and as the show approaches season six things are still twisting and turning for Juice.
As the cast and crew continue to film this penultimate season of the show, Rossi says each time he receives a script he’s not sure what to expect next and with a death toll rising, there’s no telling who will survive and who won’t be back the next time the show films.
“I feel like every episode is a finale,” Rossi said when speaking to NerdcoreMovement.com. “I’m reading it and I’m like what the hell? Let’s do this! It really started with Opie’s death where the show really changed, it’s serious now.”
There are only short teasers out for the season thus far, but one brief flash does happen to show new club vice president Chibs Telford laying into a punch on a seemingly defenseless Juice in the middle of the garage.
Was this some kind of re-initiation of trust for Juice after he almost turned rat two seasons ago and cost his club a conviction on the RICO predicates?
Rossi says what you’ll see from Juice this season is a character really reaching his breaking point with how far he will go before he finally just says enough is enough. Juice was the puppet for the sheriff while he was dangling the evidence that he had a black man as a father over his head two seasons ago, and once that was revealed he had to become Jax’s pawn in his war against Clay.
Now as this new season begins and loyalties are being tested more than ever, Juice needs to figure out who he can trust, who is against him, and whether he still wants to be a part of this world.
“There’s just so far that somebody can go one way before he goes the other way,” Rossi said. “So it’s kind of like, it’s just so long you can kind of feel bad for yourself and kind of wallow in that before things go. I think that this year you’re going to see a really, really different side of Juice.
“There’s always a breaking point and we’ll see if that happens to occur. It’s really interesting, Kurt’s masterful at the way this season’s going.”
During his time as part of the club, Juice was the young guy looking to find his way amongst the veteran members, and as he became more entrenched in the club’s activities, he’s searched for his own identity while hiding under a mask for most of the last two years.
Now the questions are mounting as far as what he’s getting out of this entire ordeal, and it’s time for Juice to finally find some answers.
“There’s a guy that just wanted that acceptance, and now I don’t think he knows where it is or what it is,” Rossi said. “It’s just kind of lost in the wind, and it makes for a dangerous scenario.”
