Sons of Anarchy: Will Tig Live or Die? Kurt Sutter Says Whatever Happens ‘Has Been Earned’

Kurt Sutter weighs in on last week’s crazy finale that seemed to leave Tig Trager right in the center of some very dangerous crosshairs with time running out on his life…

Last week’s episode of Sons of Anarchy left an ominous cliffhanger as Tig Trager came face to face with Damon Pope’s hit squad led by his No. 2 man August Marks.

The only words Tig could muster seemed pretty obvious as the time — “Oh shit” — and that seems about right given the gravity of the situation.

If not for a daring last minute save from Jax at the end of season 5, Tig would have already met a gruesome end courtesy of Mr. Pope, but instead the longtime Oakland gangster is dead and his second in charge now leads the troops. The only problem is August wasn’t ready to give up Pope’s vendetta against the man who killed his daughter so he was still demanding Tig’s head on a silver platter.

It appeared as of the end of last week when Jax realized that Tig was lying to him about the dead Iranian porn merchant that he signed his own death warrant.

On Tuesday night at 10pm ET we will all find out Tig’s fate, but no matter whether he lives or dies, Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter says it’s not being done for shock value or to off a major character to pull in the headlines.

In his latest video blog of WTF Sutter, he explains that any deaths that occur on the show happen organically and as part of the bigger story, not because he feels the need to get rid of someone just to drive up Twitter responses. If Tig dies, it’s because the story dictated that he had to go and the same can be said if he lives.

“It’s really difficult to let go of them sometimes,” Sutter said about his creations. “As I’ve said in the past, none of these decisions I’ve done about characters are ever done arbitrarily or for shock value and ‘let’s kill a main character’. We really try to follow the arc of that character as best we can, and have things happen organically and I think that’s the case in episode four that what goes down is what has been earned is what I will say.”

It certainly appeared at least by the final seconds of the episode that Tig was about to meet his end, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned about Sutter’s world it’s that nothing is predictable and no one is safe. That could be good for Tig or very bad.

The only way to know for sure is to tune into Sons of Anarchy on Tuesday night on FX at 10pm ET/PT.
