Alfred Molina will reprise his role as Dr. Octopus in the upcoming third “Spider-Man” film starring Tom Holland as the MCU multi-verse expands….
The Marvel Cinematic Multi-Verse appears to be growing with the addition of Alfred Molina to the cast of the upcoming third “Spider-Man” sequel starring Tom Holland and directed by Jon Watt.
Molina will be reprising his role as Dr. Otto Octavius aka Dr. Octopus, who he previously played in “Spider-Man 2” back in 2004 opposite Toby Maguire. Molina was praised for his portrayal of the classic “Spider-Man” villain in a film that has been hailed as one of the best superhero movies of all-time.
Of course, Molina joining the cast of the third “Spider-Man” film comes on the heels of news that Jamie Foxx would also be returning as he reprises his role as Electro after he played that part in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” in 2014 where he went up against Andrew Garfield as the webslinger.
There have been rumors flying for months that the third installment in this latest “Spider-Man” franchise would unite Tom Holland’s version of the character with Maguire and Garfield, who may make cameo appearances in the sequel. This all ties together with the knowledge that Marvel Studios is planning on exploring the multi-verse with their next set of films in the wake of “Avengers: Endgame.”
To add more fuel to the fire, Benedict Cumberbatch is slated to appear in “Spider-Man 3” as Doctor Strange as he takes on a mentor role of sorts for Peter Parker following Tony Stark’s death. Of course, Cumberbatch is also preparing for his own film sequel “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which obviously confirms some kind of plans for a Marvel multiverse.
There’s no word yet how big or how small of a role that Molina will play in the third “Spider-Man” movie but obviously he’s definitely making an appearance along with Foxx in the upcoming film. Those two villains definitely bridge the gap between the three various “Spider-Man” films from the past and present but it’s entirely possible Marvel has even bigger plans in store for this sequel.
If Maguire and Garfield both return as Spider-Man, that would be a huge moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe while acknowledging past versions of the character. It’s also possible this new multi-verse could eventually lead to the introduction of another fan-favorite Spider-Man character named Miles Morales.
Time will only tell if that will happen.
The third “Spider-Man” film is currently in production with a release date set on Dec. 17, 2021.
