A new film focused on the origins of ‘The Joker’ is in the works at Warner Bros. but there’s a catch…
It appears we will find out how the Joker got those scars after all.
Warner Bros is currently targeting a new film focusing on the origins of ‘The Joker’ with Todd Phillips (The Hangover) expected to direct the project with legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese serving as an executive producer on the project.
Now here’s where things get interesting.
According to numerous reports, ‘The Joker’ film will not fit into any current DC film storylines but instead tell an alternative version of the origin story with a brand new actor expected to fill the lead role. Jared Leto is the most recent actor to portray the Joker in ‘Suicide Squad’ and he’s expected to play the role again in ‘Suicide Squad 2’ as well as the upcoming ‘Gotham City Sirens’ film as well.
This new movie focused on ‘The Joker’ would be a completely separate narrative on the character that wouldn’t tie into the larger DC film universe currently being built. Instead, this new ‘Joker’ film would be part of a planned extension of the Warner Bros. brand that will take a unique and more creative dive on some of the most famous characters from DC Comics history.
Scorsese’s involvement is also an interesting addition as reports are stating that ‘The Joker’ origin film will feel much more like a hard boiled 1980’s crime story similar to ‘Taxi Driver’ or ‘The King of Comedy’.
A new actor will be sought out to play ‘The Joker’ with the role possibly going much younger than Leto or previous iterations of the character played by Heath Ledger in ‘The Dark Knight’ or Jack Nicholson in 1989’s ‘Batman’.
Phillips and Scott Silver (8 Mile) are reportedly already working on a script for the unnamed ‘Joker’ origin film.
